1. Caloocan City is a populous city.
Yup, Caloocan city was actually a populous city. It has a record of 1.5 M population according to the 2015 census record. The Etymology of Caloocan City
Before it was named Caloocan, it is known as “Aromahan” and “Libis Espina” during the Spanish period.
Caloocan was derived from the tTagalog word “lo-ok” which mean bay. Some believe it is from the word “sulok” which means corner since it is located on the corner of the old town of Tondo and Malabon. Hence, Caloocan was from the word play “kasuluk-sulokan” which means innermost. In 1815, Caloocan was separated from the town of Tondo. In 1961, Caloocan was declared as a city from being a town. In February 16, 1962 formerly President Diosdado Macapagal officially declared it as a City.
Caloocan has the oldest Leprosarium in Asia
Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital and Sanitarium is the oldest leprosarium in the Philippines. It was established in 1940 and was formerly known as Tala Leprosarium as it is located in Tala, Caloocan. Primarily, it caters leper victims. Specifically, the Tala Leprosarium accommodates thousands of people with Hansen’s disease all over Luzon.
In 1970, the hospital started accommodating non-leper patients. To date, Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Hospital and Sanitarium still serve as a principal referral hospital for leper victims here in the Philippines.
2. Caloocan is geographically divided in to two.
Looking on the map, Caloocan is divided into two. There is the southern part which has the borders of Malabon, and Manila. Meanwhile, the Northern part of Caloocan has the borders of the province of Bulacan, Valenzuela and Quezon City.
Did you know that the end borders of Caloocan do not meet? Yes! In fact, the cities of Valenzuela and Quezon City have a great distance from each other.
